Teacher(s):
BETH STERNLIEB
TEACHER BIO

Beth Sternlieb

Beth Sternlieb was introduced to Buddhist sitting practice in the late eighties at Ordinary Dharma in Venice, CA by Caitriona Reed a student of Thich Nhat Hanh. Beth was inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on inter-being and nonviolence and practiced regulary at home while her children were young. Beth met Trudy Goodman in 2003 when she invited Trudy to teach a group of health care practitioners at UCLA who were interested in bringing integrative healing practices to the UCLA community. Beth became Trudy’s student at that time. Beth hosted the Insight LA Dedicated Practitioners group in her home for several years until Insight LA moved to its current location. Beth has an interest in Buddhist studies and retreat practice and has helped to develop InsightLA’s Essential Dharma Program.  She is a student of Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield and a graduate of the Dedicated Practitioner Program at Spirit Rock.

Beth is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and a member of the UCLA Pediatric Pain Program clinical team where she teaches Iyengar Yoga to children and young adults with chronic pain and health problems in an integrative medical setting. In addition to teaching yoga and meditation to students with a wide variety of chronic health and pain issues, Beth has been a co-investigator on several therapeutic Iyengar Yoga research intervention studies at UCLA including Iyengar yoga for breast cancer survivors with persistent fatigue, and Iyengar yoga for young adults with Rheumatoid arthritis, Iyengar yoga for young adults with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Iyengar yoga for young adults with Depression. Beth has found her yoga practice to be a great support to mindfulness and metta practice.

Date(s): January 11 (Wednesday) - February 22 (Wednesday)
Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Description: "Wisdom is knowing I am nothing, love is knowing I am everything, and between the two my life flows." Nisargadatta Maharaj

In this class we will explore the unity of mindfulness and metta, how they work together in our practice so that we can more fully open to the full range of our experience. We will discover through the development of equanimity and balance how we can find the safety to open with compassion to our difficult states and to the difficult states in others.

This seven-week course will provide students with a more in-depth understanding of core Buddhist teachings and meditation practices essential in the journey of awakening as taught within the Insight meditation tradition.

The course is ideal for the student who has already taken the "Basics of Mindfulness Meditation" class, or has completed the "Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program.

Grounded in Buddhist principles and practices, but accessible to people of all faiths, or no faith at all, this class provides the jumping-off point for a transformational journey toward a richer, more meaningful life.

If you have some meditation experience but have not taken an InsightLA class, please contact the teacher.

The course will include meditation instruction and practice, teachings, and group discussion.
