TEACHER BIO

Glenn Davis and Ann Buck

In 2007, after practicing meditation on his own for more than a decade, Glenn Davis began practicing with Shinzen Young and Trudy Goodman.  Since 2008, Glenn has also regularly attended intensive retreats with the Zen master Joshu Sasaki Roshi.  Following his love of teaching (including as a former sailing instructor and law school professor), Glenn teaches at Insight LA and is a facilitator for Shinzen.

Ann Buck has more than 40 years of meditation background, having studied Vipassana, as well as the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition with Tsoknyi Rinpoche. Spirit Rock trained her as a Community Dharma Leader, and as a senior student of Shinzen Young, she works as a facilitator with people across the country. She teaches for InsightLA, as well as for Clare Foundation – an alcohol and substance abuse rehabilitation center. Since she is a retired business woman, teaching the dharma is her life.

Date(s): June 12 (Tuesday) - July 24 (Tuesday)
Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Description: “The Five Ways To Know Yourself” is Shinzen Young’s method of “mindful awareness” or “insight” meditation. This system includes:

- The Way of Thoughts and Emotions;
- The Way of the Physical Senses;
- The Way of Tranquility;
- The Way of Flow; and
- The Way of Human Goodness.

By practicing The Five Ways, we are able to cultivate the foundations of insight: concentration power, sensory clarity and equanimity. The practice provides a number of tools with which we can recognize and untangle the component parts of our experience, or choose to focus on the whole of experience.
The tools gained through Shinzen’s method often lead to a reduction of stress and anxiety, an increase in happiness and fulfillment, more skillful behavior, and more positive relationships with others. Through practice, these tools can help us develop the ability to fully experience each moment, and rather than being controlled by our habitual patterns, we can skillfully respond from a place of freedom, with wisdom and compassion.

Each class will include instruction, practice, question and answer periods, and discussion. This class will provide the opportunity to develop a daily practice using Shinzen’s techniques.

This class is open to all levels, and is especially appropriate for those students who have completed an InsightLA Basics or MBSR class.
