Founder and Guiding Teacher of InsightLA
Trudy Goodman is founder and Guiding Teacher of InsightLA, which offers classes, retreats and training of teachers in mindfulness and compassion across LA and southern California. She is also a founder of Growing Spirit (a family program), the Center for Mindfulness and Psychotherapy in Los Angeles, and the first Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, in Cambridge Mass.
For over 30 years Trudy has led retreats and workshops in mindfulness, Zen and psychotherapy from Harvard University to UCLA, from VA and Children’s hospitals to meditation centers worldwide. Trudy holds a graduate degree in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in East-West Psychology.
Since 1970 Trudy has devoted herself to practice and training with revered Buddhist teachers in the Zen, Theravada and Vajrayana traditions, including Zen Master Seung Sahn, Kobun Chino Otagawa Roshi and Maurine Stuart Roshi; Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and other teachers both in the US and in Asia. She is currently the senior Vipassana teacher in Los Angeles carrying teachings from both Zen and the Theravada lineage.
Founder of a school for developmentally disabled children, and celebrated as a psychotherapist, Trudy did mindfulness-based psychotherapy with children, teenagers, couples and individuals. for 25 years in Cambridge Mass. In her professional psychological training Trudy had the privilege of studying developmental psychology with masters including Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Carol Gilligan. Trudy also taught with Jon Kabat-Zinn in the founding days of the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) clinic at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. She was a resident teacher at the Cambridge Buddhist association for seven year and then completed the Vipassana teacher training program at Spirit Rock Center led by Jack Kornfield.
Passionate about embracing both relational and transcendent perspectives, Trudy's intention for InsightLA is to welcome the fullness of our humanity, through both mainstream mindfulness and Buddhist practice. When training in mindfulness practice at InsightLA, students learn how to access their intuitive wisdom and discover the boundless love that’s possible for the human heart. “We practice compassion and awareness so we can be of benefit to ourselves, each other and our world.”
