Trudy Goodman

Founder and Guiding Teacher of InsightLA

Trudy Goodman

Trudy Goodman is currently the senior Vipassana teacher in Los Angeles from the Theravada lineage of the major meditation centers  where Trudy trained -- and now teaches, with the blessings of her teachers: Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, and Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. Trudy is passionate about embracing both relational and transcendent perspectives so that the teachings encompass the fullness of our humanity. Trudy's teaching embraces both secular mindfulness and Buddhist practice. At InsightLA, everyone is invited to connect with their intuitive wisdom and rediscover the joy that's possible for the human heart.

Trudy has trained and practiced in two fields: meditation and psychotherapy. She had the privilege of studying developmental psychology with Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Carol Gilligan. For 25 years in Cambridge, Trudy did mindfulness-based psychotherapy with children, teenagers, couples and individuals. Since 1974, Trudy devoted much of her life to practicing Buddhist meditation with revered Asian and Western teachers in the Zen and Theravada traditions., including Zen Master Seung Sahn, Kobun Chino Otagawa Roshi and Maurine Stuart Roshi; Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and others.

She taught with Jon Kabat-Zinn in the early days of the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) clinic at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.  From 1991-1998, Trudy was, with her former husband, a resident Zen teacher at the Cambridge Buddhist Association. They taught Zen retreats and created seminars on the great Mahayana sutras, as well as developing Zen trainings for mental health clinicians. In 1995 she co-founded, and continues to serve as Guiding Teacher for the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy (www.meditationandpsychotherapy.org) in Boston.

After leaving her marriage, sangha, and professional community in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Trudy went into retreat; she practiced in Bhutan and India, and was a resident teacher for the Santa Fe VIpassana Group. After her father died, she moved to California to help her mother and welcome her new granddaughter and decided to start a new life, founding InsightLA (www.insightla.org) and completing Jack Kornfield’s Vipassana teacher training program.  She co-founded Growing Spirit, a family program, in 2004. Trudy’s sister, daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, Allie and Owen, live in Los Angeles; her mother died in 2008. Trudy is a contributing author: Compassion and Wisdom in Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2011); Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness (Springer, 2008); Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2005).

May our gratitude and love of life dispel all darkness and confusion,

May all beings be cherished!
