Mindfulness of White Privilege, a community event

Sep 24 (Sat)
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Santa Monica
For many of us who identify as white, we hold the paradox of both benefiting from the injustice of racism and sincerely wanting to contribute to its end. A small study group of InsightLA practitioners has been exploring this process for several months utilizing a curriculum developed around mindfulness.

Our work is about accepting, over and over again, the invitation to turn towards the pain caused by racism - even as our socialization as members of the dominant group would have us turn away. We ground our work in the two wings of mindfulness, discernment and compassion. It is not our fault that a system of racial oppression has arisen, but it is our responsibility to acknowledge our place within it and work towards its end.

We would like to share our experiences, meditation practices and resources with others in the community to together bring mindfulness, inquiry, and embodied forms of practice to white affinity work and the development of white racial awareness.

This evening discussion will be facilitated by InsightLA teachers Maureen Shannon-Chapple and Elizabeth Rice and sangha members and long-term practitioners Teresa Conrow, Heidi Shaw, Geoffrey White and Lorenzo Garbo.
