MBSR teacher training practicum: A professional training program for those interested in teaching MBSR.

Please note: The MBSR fundamentals is not a complete preparation for teaching MBSR. For information about becoming a credentialed MBSR teacher, please see the website of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center Center for Mindfulness.

The teaching fundamentals provides 68 hours of instruction and is modeled after 'MBSR fundamentals [SR-401- 8W]' at The Center for Mindfulness, Oasis Institute, UMASS Medical School in Worcester, MA.

The MBSR Fundamentals is recognized by the CFM and fulfills the MBSR Fundamentals requirement for certification through the CFM's Oasis Institute.

We believe that teaching mindfulness can only come out of the teacher's sincere dedication to and inspiration from their own mindfulness practice. This translates for the vast majority into a daily sitting practice and regular attendance at silent teacher-led retreats.

We wish to train teachers who will inspire and encourage by living what they teach and who demonstrate a keen sensitivity to the needs of individuals as well as the group.

Learning Objectives:
- Experiencing MBSR from the perspective of a participant, as well as from the perspective of an observer
- Deepening and refining one's own mindfulness practice
- Learning the nuts and bolts of the 8-week curriculum and why it is sequenced and structured the way it is
- Learning background information, study outcomes, basic neuroscience needed to teach MBSR
- Learning to lead basic yoga poses in a safe manner
- Learning about the pitfalls of mindfulness as a technique vs. mindfulness as 'the presence of heart'
- Learning to facilitate the different modules of MBSR (guided mindfulness practices, group processing and didactic material) in small groups and receive feedback
- Learning basic mindfulness approaches for working with people with different needs (like depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain)

As a participant in the nine-week practicum you will be asked to:

- Participate in the eight-week regular InsightLA MBSR class as a participant-observer, which includes 8 weekly classes of 2.5 hours and one all-day 6.5 hour session Saturday, March 4th.
- Attend weekly 4.5 hour seminar meetings which include dialogue with other practicum participants and your teacher(s), Tuesdays from 1:00-5:30pm before the regular MBSR class (which is from 6:30-9:00pm)and a 4.5 hour post-program practicum closure session.
