Introduction to Effortless Mindfulness
In one Tibetan Buddhist tradition, mindfulness meditation is taught in two stages. The first is deliberate mindfulness, which includes calm-abiding, loving-kindness, and insight into the changing contents of our mind and body. The second stage is called effortless mindfulness, not because no initial effort is made, but because of the discovery of an awareness that is already effortlessly awake, embodied, and undistracted. In deliberate mindfulness we have an insight into who we are not; in effortless mindfulness we discover who we are, our true nature.
We can begin with deliberate mindfulness as a good foundation, or we can start with effortless mindfulness. Rather than meditating to calm and focus your mind, we will learn to intentionally shift into awake awareness, which is already calm, stable, and able to effortlessly focus. This is a shift from a separate sense of self to an empty yet embodied awareness-based way of being, called open-hearted awareness.
