Introduction to Effortless Mindfulness

Feb 17 (Fri)
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Santa Monica
In one Tibetan Buddhist tradition, mindfulness meditation is taught in two stages. The first is deliberate mindfulness, which includes calm-abiding, loving-kindness, and insight into the changing contents of our mind and body. The second stage is called effortless mindfulness, not because no initial effort is made, but because of the discovery of an awareness that is already effortlessly awake, embodied, and undistracted. In deliberate mindfulness we have an insight into who we are not; in effortless mindfulness we discover who we are, our true nature.

Watch Loch Kelly's "How to Find Peace in 4 Minutes."

We can begin with deliberate mindfulness as a good foundation, or we can start with effortless mindfulness. Rather than meditating to calm and focus your mind, we will learn to intentionally shift into awake awareness, which is already calm, stable, and able to effortlessly focus. This is a shift from a separate sense of self to an empty yet embodied awareness-based way of being, called open-hearted awareness.

InsightLA and Compassion LA are pleased to present this special evening of talk and practice with Loch Kelly.

All levels of experience are welcome.

It is recommended that you read Loch's book, Shift Into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness, and listen to the meditation audio if possible before the event.
