Working with Pain - Reclaim Life and Transform Chronic Pain

Living with chronic pain is a huge challenge.

Life itself can be hard enough but having to manage pain symptoms in order to function can feel like you have a "second job," according to a former student.

With chronic pain, you do what you can physically to alleviate and subdue the sensations but what else can you do?

In this 4-week class we will start to explore how mindfulness and self-compassion can make a difference in the lives of those living with pain.

MINDFULNESS AND SELF-COMPASSION FOR PAIN:

The practice of mindfulness grounds you in the present moment but that's counter-intuitive to pain relief isn't it? Aren't we trying to get away from pain and not closer to it?

Recent research tells a different story. Studies have shown that both mindfulness and self-compassion CAN help us relate to the pain in a new way, one that is not adding so much "mental baggage" to the actual pain.

Pain levels can and have been shown to reduce through regular mindfulness practice and stress-reduction techniques. Many students have reported that pain symptoms worsen when we are stressed.

And as an added benefit, our quality of life increases significantly, independent of the pain level with mindfulness.

Self-compassion is a powerful and transformative technique that invites us to treat ourselves the way we might treat a best friend or a child who is in pain. We do what we can to make the pain go away, but our love and attention is not dependent on it. We are kind because there is pain.

In class, we will practice with guided meditations, small and large group discussions as well as didactic exercises on pain as well as mindfulness and self-compassion concepts.

No prior experience of mindfulness or meditation is necessary.
