Teacher(s):
Date(s):
Apr 23 (Sun) - Jun 11 (Sun)
Time:
7:00pm - 9:30pm (8 weeks)
Location:
Hermosa Beach
Description:
Addictions—whether to alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, or other behaviors—often stem from a desire to escape our current experience.

By bringing awareness to this tendency and by relating to our experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant, with curiosity and kindness, we can learn to observe our mind, heart, and body, even when we feel uncomfortable or reactive.

This allows us to pause, step out of our habitual tendencies, and choose a more skillful response.

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) integrates mindfulness meditation with cognitive-behavioral strategies to help you relate more compassionately and skillfully to physical, cognitive, or emotional experiences. MBRP tools are used in clinics, rehab centers, hospitals and professionals' offices around the world.

MBRP was originally developed at the University of Washington for people who have undergone treatment for substance use, to help maintain treatment gains and to decrease the probability and severity of relapse. However, the skills and qualities cultivated in this training apply to a wide range of addictive and reactive behaviors.

Over the course of eight weeks, participants will learn a variety of techniques for working with addictive behaviors and substances, including:
- Automatic Pilot and Relapse
- Awareness of Triggers and Craving
- Mindfulness in High-Risk Situations
- Mindfulness in Daily Life
- Acceptance and Skillful Action
- Seeing Thoughts as Thoughts
- Self-Care and Lifestyle Balance
- Social Support and Continuing Practice

The class will involve simple yoga and sitting meditation. If you wish to sit on a cushion please bring your own. The class includes homework to help you absorb and practice what you learned.
